Welcome to Bédarieux: Gateway to the national park of the Upper-Languedoc!
Capital of the district and town of 6000 inhabitants,at the centre of the upper Orb-valley. The district covers a large area with approximately 25,000 inhabitants.  Bédarieux is a special place between the sea and the mountains.
The site was once occupied by Roman settlers but Bédarieux was founded in the Middle Ages. In the 12th century monks were the town's masters and had a city wall built. In 1364 the English captured the town but were soon evicted. During the Reformation Bédarieux became protestant. The Duke of Montmorency captured the town in 1622. In the following period Bédarieux turned to linen weaving and tannery. In the 19th century the coal mines of Bousquet d'Orb and Graissessac brought moderate wealth to the area. They were exploited until the 1960s. Bédarieux has numerous leisure facilities including public swimming pool and tennis courts, camping and an art exhibition hall that helps make every stay enjoyable.
