Welcome to Bédarieux:
Gateway to the national park of the Upper-Languedoc!
Capital of the district and town of 6000 inhabitants,at the centre of the
upper Orb-valley. The district covers a large area with approximately
25,000 inhabitants. Bédarieux is a special place between the sea
and the mountains.
The site was once occupied
by Roman settlers but Bédarieux was founded in the Middle Ages. In the
12th century monks were the town's masters and had a city wall built.In
1364 the English captured the town but were soon evicted. During the
Reformation Bédarieux became protestant. The Duke of Montmorency captured
the town in 1622. In the following period Bédarieux turned to linen
weaving and tannery. In the 19th century the coal mines of Bousquet d'Orb
and Graissessac brought moderate wealth to the area. They were exploited
until the 1960s. Bédarieux has numerous leisure facilities including
public swimming pool and tennis courts, camping and an art exhibition hall
that helps make every stay enjoyable.

The «Perspective». A fortress from the 18th century,
which was supposed to protect the town from the flooding of the river Orb
The viaduct: the first railway line from Graissesac to Béziers
crossed the Orb-valley. ThIS spectacular line has 37 viaducts altogether.
